Playa de Las Nieves
Playa de Las Nieves by T. Diedrich
In 1967/69 a trio of larger sister ships were delivered, the first built by S.E.C.N., at Sestao, and the remaining two by Astilleros y Talleres del Noroeste - ASTANO, at Fene-Ferrol. They had capacity for 12 passengers and were reinforced for navigation through ice. Being from a different shipyard there were small differences between the first and the second two.
The first, built in Sestao, was the Playa de las Nieves. In 1978 it was sold to Antártida Pesquera Industrial, of Ushuaia (Argentina) and renamed Rio Grande. She was moored and abandoned in Buenos Aires in 1983 due to the bankruptcy of her owners, remaining there until 1999, when she was towed to San Pedro, located on the Paraná River. It appears that she was scrapped in 2001, since in that year she was deregistered in the Argentine register of merchant vessels.
