Vicente Enseñat

This shipping company was founded in 1942, beginning its journey with a small coastal ship with a wooden hull, which was joined three years later by another of similar size and also with a wooden hull. Between 1943 and 1946, three larger coastal ships were delivered, already with steel hulls. Between 1962 and 1968 she had two Panamanian companies, South Star Corporation and Ticino Corporation, which managed five ships larger than those flagged in Spain. In 1971, with the sale of its last ship, the company disappeared.

From 1962 to 1968 they had several ships under the Panamanian flag, all of them larger than those flying the Spanish flag. To do this, they created two shipping companies: South Star Corporation and Ticino Corporation. It seems to have been in partnership with a son or brother since V. & J.A. Enseñat appears as the owner behind those partnerships. The first had two ships, both acquired in 1962, which were named after Disney characters: Bamby and Dumbo. The first was scrapped in 1965 and the second in 1969, although it had been grounded since 1968. The second had three ships, bought one in 1963 and two in 1966, the first was scrapped in 1966, of the latter one was sold in 1967 and the other was sold or was layed-up in 1967. It seems that the period as shipowner of Panamanian-flagged ships ended in 1969 with the scrapping of the Dumbo.

This rather old ship was bought in 1962 by South Star Corporation. She only lasted three years, since in 1965 she was scrapped at Gijón. She perhaps was not scrapped in that year; could be that she was purchased by an undetermined owner to trade for a while longer, but there are no records that confirm this.

She was also bought in 1962 through South Star Corporation. On 22/June1967, she arrived to Las Palmas with propulsion problems, and was arrested by order of the authorities, remaining anchored so as not to occupy any dock. She was still anchored on 24/November/1968, when a storm dragged her to Las Alcavaneras beach, remaining grounded until 19/April/1969, when she was refloated. Due to the condition she was in she was declared a total constructive loss and she was auctioned, being acquired with the intention of converting her into a floating nightclub, but she was finally scrapped that same year.

Tico

The second shipping company was Ticino Corporation, which purchased the Lady Sharon in 1963, being renamed Tico. She had a rather curious propulsion system, as it consisted of two reciprocating compound engines and two low-pressure turbines. Each machine evacuated the steam to a low-pressure turbine geared to the same shaft as the machine from which it received the steam. She only lasted three years, as she was scrapped in Netherlands in 1966.

Rilda
Rilda - Collection J. Careaga
This ship and the next one were built by order of the United States Maritime Commission. They belonged to the N3-S-A1 type. The N3 type were ships for coastal traffic, the S meaning that they were powered by steam, and A1 meaning that the fuel was coal. In the case of the Rilda in 1952 the boilers were converted to burn liquid fuel. Presumably those of the Rondane would also be converted, since they followed parallel lives.

Rondane - Shipspotting
She was also an N3-S-A1 of the United States Maritime Commission. She was bought jointly with the Rilda by Ticino Corporation. It is not clear if she was sold in 1967, but from that year on she was anchored at Beirut until she sank there in 1972. She was finally scrapped at Bilbao in 1973. This scrapping at Bilbao seems to indicate that the sale, if there was one, was not completed, and that after she sank she was refloated and towed to Bilbao for scrapping.
